T&T are '94 Shell champs
Trinidad and Tobago scored seven of nine second-half goals to defeat defending champions Martinique 7-2 and recapture the Shell Caribbean football Cup at the Queen's Park Oval here on Sunday. A hat-trick from Dean Pacheco, a double from Hutson Charles and goals from Alvin Thomas and Angus Eve, after a deceptive goalless first half, sent some 20,000 home fans into a Carnival-like celebration late into the evening.With both teams opting for midfield strength, the first half saw few shots at goal. Trinidad and Tobago used the 3-5-2 system while Martinique opted for 4-4-2 but found the usual dominant Charles Edouard Corridon closely marked by Charles until the second half onslaught. Corridon, the pick of the midfield players in the tournament so far, never had the room to spray the ball around as he has done throughout the tournament. Trinidad and Tobago had the opening chance at goal when the Swiss-bated professional David Nakhid collected a loose ball just inside the 18-yard box but his powerful shot was parried by Dider Eugenie in the ninth minute. It was the only serious effort at goal by the host who survived four corners in the first 15 minutes. The slippery surface, caused by early afternoon showers, encouraged hard tackling by both teams resulting in yellow cards for Trinidad and Tobago's Sherwin Julien and Martinique's Camille Marguerite in the first half. Apart from Nakhid's shot, they remained the only significant incidents in the period. Within a minute of the resumption, however, the match took on dramatic twist. An attempted clearance from the Martinque defence found the in-rushing over-lapping Trinidad and Tobago wing back Alvin Thomas on the right side. The hard tackling Thomas rifled a powerful one time shot which had Eugenie going full stretch to his right. The keeper got his hand to the ball but could not keep it from powering into the net to send the crowd, headed by FIFA president Jaoa Havelange and including the legendary King of football Pele, into a frenzy. The cheers had hardly died down when Martinique levelled. Nakhid failed to control a loose ball just in Trinidad and Tobago's half which was won by Thiery Fondelot. The Martinque striker moved the ball forward before slamming a powerful left footer past a surprised Clayton Ince in the Trinidad and Tobago citadel. One minute later, the defending champs found themselves behind again when, from the touch off, Trinidad and Tobago scored through Hutson Charles. Charles, one of the surviving members of the famous 'Strike Squad', moved goalwards from the kick-off, dribbling his way to the 18-yard box from where he unleashed a vicious right footer past a bewildered Eugenie on the near post. |
