Errol McFarlane double sees T&T past St Vincent
Lebanon-based striker Errol McFarlane jr was the hero for Trinidad and
Tobago as his late double guided the Soca Warriors to a 2-0 victory
over St Vincent and the Grenadines in their 2006 semi final round World
Cup qualifier at Arnos Vale, St Vincent, on Wednesday.McFarlane silenced the packed Arnos Vale with his first striker in the
79th minute when he stabbed home from close range at a point when the
home team was pushing and came close to breaking the deadlock. He then sealed the three points for coach Bertille St Clairs team in the 87th minute when Marlon Rojas found him from the left and with the Vincent defense napping he clinically fired home from just inside the box past goalkeeper Fitzgerald Bramble to send the small band of T&T fans, backed by Angostura Woodbrook Playboys, into a frenzy. The result was a great one for us away for home. I thought we got a strong fight but our team never gave into it and thats what counted in the end, coach St Clair told TTFF Media after the game We were affected a bit by the heat and then the Vincentians were coming at us but we were able to withstand their pressure. We have work to do still but I think piece by team things are coming together. The goals were a late relief for hardworking skipper Angus Eve and his men who were made to endure large periods of pressure from the Vincentians who were inspired by English-based striker Rodney Jack. Coach St Clair threw midfielder Brent Rahim on the right of midfield and his constant running at the Vincentians had a valuable impact as his cross from the right led to Lawrence flicking on for McFarlane to nail home for the opening item. Moments before T&T also had a close call against them when McFarlane scored from close up after Eve did all the hard work, moving into the box before playing across. Birmingham City striker Stern John, who had a relatively quiet afternoon, had a close first half miss when a quick move forward saw McFarlane play across from the right for him but his touch from close range was stopped by thekeeper. Defender Marvin Andrews also went close with a header but the Vincentians had their fair share of scoring chances with Jack being the main culprit. He hit wide on a one on one with keeper Daurance Williams in the 32nd minute. Orlando Williams had a glorious chance in the 72nd minute but somehow hit wide from point blank range as T&T seemed to be wilting at that stage of the game before coming to life soon after. The T&T defense of Andrews, Dennis Lawrence, Brent Sancho and Marlon Rojas were made to work harder than they may have expected but were the ones smiling at the end as T&T look forward to their next semi-final encounter away to St Kitts/Nevis on September 5.
