Cornell Glen goal blanks Suriname
Cornell Glen scored his fourth goal of the tournament to steer T&T
to a 1-0 win over Suriname in the final match of Group D, in the
Digicel Cup Football Championships yesterday at Larry Gomes Stadium in
Malabar, Arima.Glen, who scored a hat-trick in the opening match on Wednesday against
Puerto Rico, broke the deadlock five minutes after being introduced to
replace Conrad Smith in the 60th minute. The MetroStars (MLS) player was on spot to hit a ferocious bullet away from goalkeeper Harold Blokland, after the Surinamese defence failed to clear a loose ball following a low free-kick by Kerwyn Jemmott. The first-half was entertaining, competitive and played with a high intensity. Although there were no goals, there were half-chances by both sides. T&Ts only downfall was goalkeeper Daurance Williams wasnt handling the cross balls effectively, left-wing back Avery John was not getting back fast enough after going down the line to help in attack, and not enough players were up front when the cross balls came along. With Suriname unable to get the win needed against the Soca Warriors, Grenada clinched the second spot and a place, along with T&T into the next round in February by overhauling Puerto Rico 5-2 in the opening match. Inside the first three minutes the Grenadians were two goals up through an own goal and another by Ricky Charles. Then, in the second-half Grenada went further ahead with goals by Denis Rennie (57th), Bernard Williams (68th) and Cassim Langaigne (75th). After coasting to the comfortable 5-0 lead, the Grenadians gave up two soft goals in the final six minutes. First, a casual Patrick Modeste, the Grenada defenceman, was put under pressure by Puerto Rican substitute Jose Garcia, who won the ball and scored easily in the 84th minute, and Hector Rivera de Jesus added the other two minutes later as a result of sloppy defending. Puerto Rico finished the match with 10 players as Marco Velez was sent off in the second-half for two bookable offences. T&T Team: Daurance Williams, Avery John, David Atiba Charles, Derek King (capt), Anton Pierre, Stephen Cruickshank (Cyd Gray 67th), Leslie Fitzpatrick, Kerwyn Jemmott, Denzil Theobald, Conrad Smith (Cornell Glen 60th), Nigel Pierre (Michael Celestine 81st). Results: T&T 1 (Cornell Glen 65th) v Suriname 0. Grenada 5 (Own goal 1st; Ricky Charles 3rd; Denis Rennie 57th; Bernard Williams 68th; Cassim Langaigne 75th) v Puerto Rico 2 (Jose Garcia 84th; Hector Rivera de Jesus 86th). |
