Trinidad gain second win in series

HUNDREDS stormed the gates and jumped fences to the football ground in San Fernando today and saw Trinidad beat British Guiana 2-1 in the fourth game of the quadrangular tourney. All the goals came in the first half.

In the third minute of play, British Guiana's goal-keeper, Devonish, failed to collect a long shot from left-winger Cabral and right-winger Leggard, following through scored easily.

Then in the eleventh minute, inside left Gray dribbled through, passed to inside right Franco, who returned the ball to Gray and that was the second Trinidad goal.

British Guiana's goal was a penalty for handling. Skipper Braithwaite scored.

It was a tough exciting game with hard charging by the Guianese, who were speedier on the ball, but could not match Trinidad's cleverness in short ground passing and ball control.

While Trinidad had the better of play in the first half, it was the Guianese who excelled in the second, but the strong Trinidad defence with fullbacks Hills and de la Bastide, and wing halves Griffith and Aleong excelling, kept the Guianese at bay.

The Guianese concentrated principally on shooting from outside the area, but their shots were too feeble to make an impression, except for one each from inside left Julien and centre forward Pieters, which forced the goalkeeper Gomez to turn the ball round the post.

The Guianese star of the first game, leftwinger Weithers, had his movement restricted and thus reduced the effectiveness of the front line.

Gray and Leggard were the pick of the Trinidad forward line, which moved smoothly until the hard tackling Guianese blocked them.

Trinidad have now beaten Barbados and British Guiana, while Jamaica beat Barbados and drew with British Guiana.

Barbados are scheduled to meet British Guiana on Monday, and Trinidad play Jamaica on Tuesday in the final match of the series.
