'Soca Warriors' top Sedley Joseph Group....whipping Haiti 3-1

A pair of second half goals by TT Pro League’s B Mobile Joe Public striker Gary Glasgow contributed to Trinidad and Tobago 3-1 win over Haiti in their final Sedley Joseph Group match of the Digicel Caribbean Cup at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on Wednesday night. Trinidad and Tobago overtook Haiti for the top group spot winning two matches and drawing one while the Haitians who also qualified for the semis had two wins and a loss. The new look ‘Soca Warriors’ took early control of the match putting the Haitians under pressure. Young Daryl Roberts who had an impressive match against Martinique, showed similarity in the early stages when he created an opening for Gary Glasgow in the 6th minute, but Gary was beaten to the cross ball by Haitian goal keeper Normil Yvesner. Roberts was in the thick of things again springing into the air to meet Leslie Fitzpatrick’s 20 yard left sided cross but couldn’t get over the ball as he headed high over bar. Three minutes later as Trinidad and Tobago continued to dominate, striker Glasgow saw his six yard effort flash over bar. The opportunity was built around a strong run down the right flank by San Juan Jabloteh’s defender Nigel Daniel who swung the ball across the area and found Club teammate Kerry Baptiste who supplied the pass to Glasgow. After applying all the pressure with little resistance from the Haitians, the ‘Warriors’ got the opening item in the 16th minute. Superstar Rangers midfielder Kerwyn Jemmott converted a well worked 25 yard free kick past goal keeper Yvesner with his low left footed shot for the 1-0 advantage. The first positive effort by the Haitians came in the 24th minute when Raymond Ednerson broke past the Trinidad and Tobago defence for a one on one with goal keeper Jan Michael Williams, but the W Connection custodian came up well with the near post block. On the counter attack and a smooth pair of passes between Roberts and Glasgow created a good chance. Roberts’s shot however, didn’t have the pace on it as goalkeeper Yvesner collected easily. In the 30th minute Haiti won a free kick a couple of yards outside the area, but team captain Germain Peter struck it high over bar. Haitians Lormera Roody, Raymond Ednerson, Baptiste Fritzson and Captain Germain Peter started to get into their game as they took the attack to the T&T defence in search of an equalizer. T&T’s US based Darryl Roberts got another attempt in the 36th minute when he ran on to a tricky Gary Glasgow back pass only to shoot high over bar from inside the penalty area. With continued pressure on the Haitian defence, striker Glasgow got another opportunity but wasted it, the Joe Public striker was on spot to receive a loose ball after goalkeeper Yvesner fisted clearance from Leslie Fitzpatrick’s 22-yard free kick. The score remained in favor of the ‘Soca Warriors’ as both teams left for the dressing rooms at the half. Early into the second period Haiti took control of the match with ball possession and regular attacks down the flanks. In the 46th minute Raymond Ednerson headed over bar from Lormera Ednerson’s cross ball. Another threat on goalkeeper Jan Michael Williams’ goal came when defender Gilles Frantz made an overlapping run down the left to release a shot on target. Williams however, easily parried the Haitian’s 52nd minute effort. The Haitian coach, Luis Amelio Garcia then made a double change introducing Brunel Fucien and Cadet Eliphene for Baptiste Fritzson and Lormera Roody respectively in the 54th minute. Soon afterwards the change made a difference for the Haitians when they leveled the scores in the 55th minute. Substitute Brunel Fucien made T&T pay for some poor marking when he broke into the area and slotted the ball low and well wide of goalkeeper Jan Michael Williams to even the score at 1-1. Moments later light rains came down as the pressure was building on the T&T defence, as Haiti held the better advantage of possession, even forcing the ‘Warriors’ coach Wim Rijsbergen to replace Seon Power with another defender Dwayne Jack in the 62nd minute. But not long after, Trinidad and Tobago capitalized on a rare chance in the second half to regain advantage in the 67th minute. Gary Glasgow volleyed in goal from inside the area after Roberts played down a cross from substitute Kwame Wiltshire for the 2-1 advantage. The Trinidad and Tobago players soon regained their rhythm and matched the great plays of Haitians Germain Peter and goalscorer Brunel Fucien. T&T coach Rijsbergen then made another change, replacing Kerry Baptiste with Caledonia AIA’s fleet-footed Hayden Tinto in the 79th minute. Trinidad and Tobago then buried Haiti five minutes from time when Glasgow punished a defensive error by defenders Mayard Josue and Guerrier Parnel collecting the ball, running past goal keeper Normil Yvesner to shoot past two players for his second and a 3-1 lead for T&T. Haiti got an opportunity in the 89th minute from just outside the area, but Germain Peter left footed effort flew high and wide of goalkeeper Williams’ goal. And in extra time Guillaume Stephane broke past the T&T defence to force a save and corner out of goalkeeper Williams’ in the closing stages. The corner was futile as referee Courtney Campbell blew his final whistle. Trinidad and Tobago will now have to wait on tomorrow’s Booby Sookram Group matches to find out who they will face in their semifinal clash on Saturday at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.
