Trinidad win soccer tournament
TRINIDAD handed Jamaica a crushing 4-0 defeat before a crowd of 10,000 at Queen's Park Oval today to win the second game in the current football series, and clinch the championship. They won the first match 1-0. The final 'Test' will be on Tuesday. Trinidad's sound defence and hard hitting attack outplayed the visitors in every line, except goal, where a tireless and over-worked Murphy saved the side from a more humiliating defeat.Once again Jamaica's forward line failed dismally; in marked contrast to their splendid display on Thursday when they beat the South 3-1, the visiting forwards today on a hard fast ground ideally suited to the Jamaican style, moved with leaden feet being conspicuously beaten to the ball by defenders who were all putting bite to their tackles, anticipating the passes and covering beautifully. TIGHT GRIP Such a tight grip was kept on both the Jamaican flanks that insidemen Hill, East and Lue had to try to carve a path down the middle — an effort which proved beyond them, especially as Hill was a shadow of his real self, perhaps unfit, while Lue seemed just a shade in constructiveness behind Bartlett, who had been dropped. Thus with the insidemen not making goals and the wingers in[illegible], East at centre forward was hardly ever put into a position to score for the entire match. Then early in the second half when Trinidad were leading 1-0, Alexander noting the ineptness of the forwards, moved up temporarily from centre half to inside left in a move welcomed by the rampant Trinidadian players, who twice broke through to score, and eventually finished with three goals in a grand eight-minute spell, although Alexander had taken over his old berth before the last goal. However, Alexander must not be blamed, since the situation required desperate measures. THE TEAMS Jamaica fielded Murphy, Chevannes, Lowe, Largie, Alexander, Chen, Smith, Hill, East, Lue and Williams. Trinidad made only one change in their team that won the first match, bringing in Charleau at right half for Gamaldo. The team: Cax Baptiste, Rodriguez, Hills, Charleau, Daniel, Griffith, Hamel-Smith, Son Baptiste, Franco, Grey and Lovelace. Trinidad were on top from the opening whistle, quickly forcing a corner, and in the second minute Gray flicked a beauty to Franco, which spread-eagled the defence, and left Franco with only Murphy to beat. Franco shot from 10 yards only to see Murphy stick out his foot from which the ball ricocheted up to the cross bar and back into play. More pressure, then a free kick against Jamaica, left Franco in possession, the burly centre pushed the ball on the run to Baptiste, who scored in the 13th minute. It was around the 19th minute that East switched to Smith, who tested Cax Baptiste for the first time. Trinidad's defence then took charge, forcing the poor opposing wingers to go the way they wanted and by timing their tackles beautifully, were on top for the rest of the half. FOILED Gray, Hamelsmith and Franco were only foiled by Murphy and Alexander. Once Franco staggered the upright, then Gray scooped another shot over the bar when well positioned. Towards the end as the red-shirted Trinidadian continued the pressure, Hamelsmith shot weakly and Gray put the ball over the bar at the end of lovely movement between Franco and Lovelace. Early in the second half, when Trinidad kicked down, Jamaica made a smash-and-grab raid, forcing a corner, from which Baptiste made his second save of the match. Jamaica tried to carve a way down the middle with long overhead passes, but the tall Trinidad defenders easily coped with the attacks. It was about this time that Alexander moved down, leaving Chen to play stopper, but Chen was too slow to hold Franco. In the 16th minute, Charleau got by Chen to score, and two minutes later as both Largie and Chevannes were undecided, Franco passed to Lovelace who lobbed over for Gray to nod into the net. Alexander moved back to centre half, but Franco scored the fourth goal in the 22nd minute. By now the Jamaicans were completely mastered, with Franco excelling, and Murphy at times, seemed to be playing Trinidad single-handedly. It was a fine victory for Trinidad who left no doubt as to their superiority on their present form. |
