Jamaica win third soccer 'Test'

JAMAICA recovered some of her lost football prestige in nosing out Trinidad 1-0 in the final "Test" of the three-match soccer series before another big crowd at Queen's Park Oval this afternoon.

Lord Hailes, Governor General of the West Indies, was among the spectators who saw the visitors hold on grimly after Alexander converted a penalty midway in the first half.

Last year Jamaica won all three matches against Trinidad and totalled five goals to Trinidad's one. This time Trinidad won two of three matches totalling five goals to Jamaica's one.

Today's match did not produce very good football, but the Jamaicans were faster on the ball which meant a great difference, Alexander reshuffled his team in an effort to strengthen the wings and the forward line generally.

East was experimented with at outside right, the other forwards being Bartlett, Hill, Lue and Williams. The move certainly gave the Trinidadian defence something to think about.

On the half-line were Lewis, Alexander and Largie, with the two backs being Chevannes and Lowe who have emerged from this tour with flying colours.

Murphy again

Murphy again kept the goal and once more was the wall on which many a Trinidad movement crumpled.

Anxious to make a clean sweep of the series, Trinidad fielded their best team, only bringing in Gamaldo at right-half for Charleau.

Jamaica began pressing soon after the whistle before Trinidad's fine defence relieved the pressure, but not for long as beating their men to the ball, Chevannes and Largie fed East who was continually shaking off Rodrigues to give to his inside men.

Unfortunately Jamaica's shooting was weak from outside the area.

Midway the half East side footed to Hill who beat the shadowing centre-half who back-pulled the Jamaican in the area and Alexander taking the penalty fooled Cax Baptiste with a low moderate shot, just inside the upright.

The Jamaican defence was called upon to work, and it was just as well that Lovelace at outside left for Trinidad had an off-day, one shot just before half-time when he seemed unable to miss, slithered weakly off his right foot.

By this time, Alexander had so negatived Franco, that little cohesion or communication was possible between the two flanks and raids on Jamaica's goal were often more fortuitous than planned.

Bartlett had a fine chance to score from a corner kick which seemed to suprise him, and the ball bounced tamely off his foot for Baptiste to save easily.

Good move

In the second half Trinidad switched 19-year-old Ron Gray from inside left to centre-forward in an effort to cope with Alexander, while Hamelsmith at outside right, stayed far back, shooting through-passes along the touchline to Son Baptiste as Lowe was right on top of him.

This move worked for a time and caused considerable trouble as Baptiste broke through repeatedly, but could not find his fellows through the covering field of Alexander and Lewis.

However, Trinidad definitely had the run of play and repeatedly they got into the Jamaica area, though they were never allowed to settle down by the quickly recoiling defence and always when they go through, there was Murphy to bring off a beautiful save.
