Cuba, Trinidad draw 2-2 in CONCACAF soccer
A BRILLIANT header one minute from time enabled Cuba to draw 2-2 with host country Trinidad and Tobago in the tenth match of the Central, North American and Caribbean Football Confederation (CONCACAF) Socccer Championship finals here last night. Trinidad led 1-0 at half time.
Cuba dominated play for most of the 90 minutes, but Trinidad went ahead in the 15th minute with a goal from Wilfred Cave, and increased the lead with another from Clibert Lennard in the 70th. The Cubans, after an unlucky first half in which they three times hit the crossbar with Trinidad keeper Figuroux helplessly beaten, finally hit back in the 77th minute, with a low hard shot from Elejalde. One minute from time, substitute Lanza rounded off 20 minutes of unrelenting Cuban pressure, beaten back by some great saves by Figeroux, with a splendid header to tie the game. The draw gave Trinidad their second point from four games in the championship series, pushing Honduras into the cellar, with only one point from three games. The main title fight looks like being Thursday night's clash between the two leaders, Costa Rica and Mexico, both unbeaten and with five points each from two wins and a draw. Nobody has yet scored against the Mexicans, who have themselves netted only three goals, while Costa Rica have notched five and conceded only one. Standings .. p w d l f a pts. |
