IN EASILY the best match of the tour so far, Jamaica defeated the visiting Trinidad soccer team 1-0 at Sabina Park last night, and clinched the three-game series, which is scheduled to end tomorrow night. The home side won the first match 2-0 on Monday last.

Both sides gave pleasing exhibitions of short passing. This was particularly satisfying on the part of the Jamaicans, who although winners in the first encounter, were outshone by Trinidad in mid-field play.

Jamaica were on the attack for the greater part of the match, but inaccurate shooting rather than a strong defence prevented the homesters getting a goal, although Rawlins "Cax" Baptiste in goal was efficient.

As in the first game, Trinidad found the Jamaica defence all but impenetrable. For even when they had got past right back Walter Chevannes and the ubiquitous Frankie Lewis at left half, they had goalkeeper Selvyn Murphy to cope with. And Murphy was his usual brilliant self—diving full length to save or kicking, pushing and boxing the ball out at times when split second would have made all the difference.

Inside left, John McVorran, completing the visitors' first movement, had a fair chance to try for goal, but kept the ball too long on his left foot and lost possession.

PLAN FAILS

Following movements, heading through the centre, were broken up by third back Ken Hamilton. Seeing this, centre forward Carlton Franco twice sent air passes to outside left Dennis Thomas in subsequent attacks in an attempt to break through. But the plan failed.

Franco then went through himself on the very next occasion, but had the ball lifted off his right foot by right half Karl Largie, speeding from the left, when the Trinidadian was well positioned to shoot.

In the 40th minute, Jamaica had a close shave when Murphy had to dive to the right to push out a grounder from the boring Franco. Murphy barely deflected the shot out, and the ball was accidentally picked up by a ball boy before it went outside. Referee Donovan Robinson then awarded a corner to Trinidad.

Immediately after the interval, Murphy was called upon to dive twice to save well placed ground shots, one by Dennis Turton.

After an attractive bit of combination between centre forward Elvin Schloss and inside right
Anthony Hill, ended with Hill beating two men and sending the ball past Baptiste in goal. It was a well taken shot, the ball travelling low and hard three feet from the left upright, and the 5,000 crowd cheered what appeared to be a goal. But the referee had blown for off-side by left-winger Aubrey Lowe.

Closing in for a shot at goal, Hill was fouled between two defenders in the 68th minute, and
referee Robinson awarded a penalty which captain and inside left Franz Alexander easily converted. Alexander took a technically beautiful shot, almost tapping the ball past Baptiste.

In the closing minutes, Lewis tried two headers, one of which went to goal, but was held by the alert keeper.
