A spirited all out second half attack saw Trinidad & Tobago’s Under 20 Women footballers come away with a 2-0 victory over Venezuela’s Under 20 women’s team in a friendly at the Irigo Brigido Estadio Nacional in Caracas on Friday evening.
Goals from Kenya Cordner in the 60th and promising St Joseph’s Convent midfielder Bianca Walker in the 65th minute to seal the win for T&T women who are preparing for the CONCACAF Final Round World qualifiers in Mexico next month.
Cornder drove a left footer home after being found unmarked inside the penalty box by debutant Marissa Mohammed.
Then soon after substitute Tamar Watson nodded on a Cordner corner for the lurking Walker to head past the stranded Venezuelan goalie for a 2-0 T&T lead and subsequent win following a 1-1 draw between the two teams last week.
T&T coach Jamaal Shabazz was pleased with the win and the tour on a whole but wasn’t getting carried away before the qualifiers.
“We are very happy with this result because we are so far unbeaten on this trip and it is the first time we have a women's team play outside of the Caribbean unbeaten,” Shabazz told TTFF Media.
"We kept emphasizing on the players the need to get our nose in front because Venezuela and ourselves are on the same level. The first half they had the better of the exchanges but we turned it up a notch and were rewarded with two good goals in the second half.
"The performances of the twins Maria and Marissa Mohammed has brought something to our team as players born and grown in the USA they have no inhibtions about heading and the intensity of the game.We still have a lot of work before we go to Mexico but a lot of things are clearer to us now about our team and the women's program,” he ended.
