The Mid-Continent University men's soccer team has had some trouble of late cashing in scoring opportunities. That was not an issue for the Cougars on Tuesday.
Mid-Continent (2-4-1) got a pair of goals from Keegan Bacchus and a tally from Rafael Xavier on the offensive end of the field, while not yielding a shot on goal defensively, as they dispatched with the Williams Baptist College Eagles (1-7) by a score of 3-0 on Tuesday afternoon in Walnut Ridge, Ark.
Williams Baptist took the first four shots of the match, however, they were unable to find the frame with any of them, and that would prove costly. Bacchus tallied his first marker on the day in the 29th minute, beating Eagles' goalkeeper Hector Vera to put the Cougars on top 1-0. Mid-Continent was out-shot 6-2 in the period, but all six of the Williams Baptist shots missed wide of the mark, and at intermission, the Cougars held a 1-0 lead. Coming out of the break, Mid-Continent began to take control of the match, and 13 minutes into the second frame, Xavier connected on a penalty kick - the Cougars' first since October 7, 2010 against Harris-Stowe State University - to push the MCU lead to 2-0. Just 2:48 later, Jamison Imhoff was awarded another penalty kick opportunity, but Vera came up with the stop to momentarily keep the margin at 2-0. Bacchus, however, was not through, as he tallied his second goal of the match in the 67th minute, capping the 3-0 win.
Adam Lewis (2-2) picked up the win in goal for the Cougars, notching his first shutout of 2012, while Vera (0-3) took the loss for the Eagles. Each team took eight shots in the contest, but Mid-Continent had the only five shots on goal of the contest.
The two teams will re-hash this tilt on Saturday as a part of MCU's homecoming festivities. The scheduled kick-off for the match is 2 p.m.
