The Milligan College men's soccer team fell to host Maryville College (Maryville, Tenn.) during the final leg of the Nike Kick-Off Classic Sunday, Aug. 31, by a final of 2-3.
The Buffs started out “flat” according to Milligan Head Coach Adam Laney, as they got down a quick 0-2. The Buffs rallied just before time expired at the half mark from a Joel Cowan (Mt. Grace, Trinidad and Tobago) goal, courtesy of junior Philip Wilson (Middlesbrough, England).

Maryville scored to open up the half, while Milligan answered 11 minutes later this time from junior Franklin Mbougue (Yaounde, Cameroon). The Scots fended off the Buffs to claim the win.

Wilson ended the night with two assists, while senior Josh Stephens (Jacksonville Beach, Fla.) tallied one assist. Defensively, junior Bryan Newbold (Sylva, N.C.) recorded six saves on the night.

“We dug ourselves in a hole early,” said Laney. “I made some decisions that affected the flow of play and we just could not get back in the game.”

Newbold, Stephens and Mbougue were selected to the All-Tournament team for the Nike Kick-Off Classic.

The Buffs travel to Greeneville, Tenn., Saturday, Sept. 6, to take on Tusculum College. The game is set to start at 7:00 p.m.
