The No. 19 University of South Florida men’s soccer team remained unbeaten in BIG EAST play with a 1-0 defeat of West Virginia at the USF Soccer Stadium Sunday afternoon.
“It nice to start 4-0 in conference,” said head coach George Kiefer. “Kevon put the team on his back in the second half and that’s what you want your seniors to do. I was very happy to see him get that goal.”
Coach Kiefer’s Bulls outshot the Mountaineers 13-8 with seven being on goal.
“We have been practicing that cross to the outside box at practice all year,” said Mohammed, who also had an assist on a cross in the USF win over Pitt on Friday night.
“My teammates stayed in the game and kept fighting,” said Neaves. “Javed made a perfect pass and I was fortunate to be standing in the right place, all I had to do was put it in. It was a good win for the team and continues a strong start in conference play.”
Sophomore goalkeeper Jeff Attinella recorded three saves to improved to 5-0 on the season and notched his third shutout in a row. Attinella has not allowed a goal in 349 minutes of action. He took over as the starting goalie five games ago and has allowed just two goals in that time.
For the rookie Libreros, it was his first appearance in the box score.
“I am excited about the amount of time our freshmen played today,” said Kiefer. “They played for 10 to 15 minutes here and there, and each made an impact on the game and our success. Felipe got his first minutes all year and produced. He really was responsible for our goal and another near goal.”
Five freshman played against West Virginia and accounted for 161 minutes of action.
The Bulls, 4-0-0 in league, strengthened their grip on first place in the BIG EAST Red Division and improved to 6-1-1 overall. USF leads second place St. Johns (2-0-1), who hosts Providence in Queens later this evening.
The Bulls will continue BIG EAST action and complete their three-game homestand on Friday, Oct. 3 at 7:30 p.m. when the Syracuse Orange come to town.
