Redshirt senior Jeremy Delpino (Arouca, Trinidad/Virginia Intermont) converted on a penalty kick in the 53rd minute to propel Radford to a 1-0 win over Longwood in non-conference men's soccer at Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium on Wednesday night.
The Highlanders (5-3-1) were awarded a penalty kick on a Longwood handball in the box seven minutes into the second half, and Delpino made good on it with a shot to the top left corner.
Longwood (4-4-1) had a pair of chances to go ahead in the first half. In the 34th minute, a corner kick from Martin Vickerton was deflected out to Trey Thornton, who had a clean look from just inside the penalty box, but headed the ball wide of the net. Less than four minutes later, the Lancers had another opportunity when Thornton sent a pass from the right side to Brian Germain, whose shot from seven yards out was stopped by senior goalkeeper Zach Roszel (Warrenton, Va./East Carolina).
Despite 14 shots and eight corner kicks in the first half, the Lancers couldn't find the back of the net.
Roszel finished the night with five saves to post his second straight shutout, and fourth of the season.
Radford returns to Big South action on Friday, hosting Presbyterian at 6 p.m.
