Playing in their first home game of the season, the Wallace State soccer team defeated Holmes Community College (Miss.) 6-0 on Wednesday.

The shutout was their second straight, following up a 7-0 win against Pearl River (Miss.) in Tuscaloosa last week.

The Lions dominated both ends the field against Holmes, scoring three goals before half time and three in the second half.

“We’re moving in the right direction,” said Wallace State coach Barry Spitzer. “We haven’t quite found our rhythm yet, and we have areas we need to work on, but we had the luxury of playing a lot of people today, which was great for our first home game.”

Sophomore Antonio Cabello contributed three goals. He scored first on an assist by Devon Lecock at eight minutes into the game. In the second half he scored back-to-back goals on assists by Chris Shumate, the first at 60 minutes, and the other two minutes later.

Lecock scored 14 minutes into the game on an assist by Conner Cappelletti. Roby Del Giudice scored 1:28 before the half on an assist by Jake Smith.  Nineteen minutes into the second half, Shumate converted a pass from Tyrone Walters for the final Wallace State goal.

Kyle Joseph had two saves at goalkeeper in the first half. Tony Makela picked up three saves as goal keeper in the second half.

Wallace State (2-1) will play their next two games on the road, starting with a match at Young Harris College (Ga.) on Sunday. The Lions return home on Sept. 10 to host Pear River at 3:30 p.m.
