The Lions' men's soccer team defeated SAC rival Lenoir-Rhyne College 2-1 Wednesday night at the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. The Lions improved to 8-7 overall and 3-3 in the SAC. The Bears fell to 6-5-1 on the season and 2-3 in the league.
David Robb (Bangor, Northern Ireland) tied the contest in the 52nd minute. He shot the ball past the Bear's keeper on a free kick from around 25 yards away.
Ernest Sobers (Enterprise, Trinidad) scored the match winner at the 74:37 mark on a breakaway pass from Troy Cole (Laguna Hills, Calif.). He sent the ball into the back of the net from about 15 yards out. It was Sobers fourth game winning goal of the season.
MHC out shot the Bears, 13-6. The Lions edged L-R in corner kicks, 8-4. Sean Merfeld (Alpharetta, Ga.) played the entire contest in the net for MHC and made a pair of saves. Matthew DiCerbo (Boca Raton, Fla.) also played the entire match in the net for the Bears and made five saves.
Mars Hill will play at Francis Marion University on October 11 at 1 p.m. L-R will host SAC foe Newberry College on October 18 at 8 p.m.
