chinapoo_richardFormer Long Island University men’s soccer great Richard Chinapoo was selected to the NCAA College Cup 50th Anniversary Team it was announced Thursday by the NCAA. Chinapoo was one of 11 former student-athletes and one coach selected to the team through an online voting process. Chinapoo was chosen among a list of 32 student-athletes and six coaches.

Chinapoo was a four-time All-American and led the Blackbirds to three conference titles while from 1978-81. He scored 55 goals in his career and helped LIU to a 51-13-8 mark. Chinapoo was elected to the LIU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001 after playing professionally for the famed New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League.

The rest of the team included Jeff Agoos, Virginia; Armando Betancourt, Indiana; Paul Caligiuri, UCLA; Angelo DiBernardo, Indiana; Brad Friedel, UCLA; John Harkes, Virginia; Glenn Myernick, Hartwick; Farrukh Quraishi, SUNY Oneonta; Claudio Reyna, Virginia; and Al Trost, Saint Louis. Indiana’s Jerry Yaigley was picked as the team’s coach.

Chinapoo and the rest of the team will be honored at the 2008 NCAA Men's College Cup in Frisco, Texas, at Pizza Hut Park on Dec.12-14.
