Junior Jake Russell had a goal and assist as the Richmond men's soccer team gave Clint Peay his first collegiate coaching victory 3-1 over Bowling Green on Friday in the Duquesne Invitational.

Richmond moves to 1-2 on the season and will play Manhattan on Saturday night at 5 p.m.

"We needed a win, so we're excited about that," first-year head coach Clint Peay said. "They guys worked hard and created some good chances. Bowling Green played risky with numbers behind the line of the ball, so we were able to get in behind them and get some 1v1s in the back."

Russell set up the Spiders' first goal just 4:24 in, crossing the ball from the left flank to sophomore Jed Antoun, who was there to head it into the back of the net for his second-career goal.

Bowling Green's Cameron Hepple scored in the 41st minute to tie the game at intermission, but Russell scored his ninth-career goal, including what proved to be his third game winner in the 50th minute.

Freshman Jonathan Stephenson won a ball and fed Russell, who took off on a breakaway from about 40 yards out, and with just the keeper to beat, he dribbled around him to the right and tapped it into the back of the net uncontested.

The Spiders third goal also came on a breakaway that freshman Houston Oldham started by sending a through ball to senior Kern Gardiner, who had just the keeper to beat and rolled the ball past him for his fourth-career goal.

"They were playing a high line and we did a good job of getting behind them," Peay said.

Richmond keeper Brock Tomlinson made 10 saves in goal.
