The Saint Leo men’s soccer team (3-1) shutout their third opponent of the year, defeating the Georgia SouthWestern Hurricanes 3-0, Friday evening from Hurricane Field.
Glenn quickly made a dent in the scoreboard, scoring just 64 seconds into the game. After Luterbach sent the ball down to his foot, he sent a pinpoint pass to Nogueira who split a pair of defenders en route to sending the ball to Glenn near the top of the 18-yard box. Glenn made one move on the Hurricanes goalie before slotting the ball past the keeper into the lower right corner of the net to give the Lions the 1-0 lead.
Glenn’s offensive presence forced the Hurricanes into another significant mistake. The junior forward’s hustle after a loose ball forced the goalkeeper out of his box where he was whistled for handling. On the quick restart, Glenn placed the ball on the ground and sent it past a scrambling ‘keeper who could not get back in time to protect his net.
Cutler set Glenn up for his third goal of the game in the 32nd minute. Cutler sent a through ball to Glenn who sprinting down the center of the field. Glenn made one move a defender and rocketed home his third goal of the afternoon and his fourth of the season. The 3-0 advantage going into the half proved to be enough for the Green & Gold.
In the second half, the Lions tightened the screws on the Hurricanes offense, allowing them to take only three shots in 45 minutes of action. The impressive play also allowed Coach Harrison to play everyone on the roster. The Lions controlled play from beginning to end, as SLU solidified the win.
In their last three games against GSW, Saint Leo has posted a 3-0 record, scoring a total of 13 goals while shutting out the Hurricanes in each of the three contests.
The three shutouts on the year is just one shy of the four the squad accumulated during the 2008 season.
On the day, the Lions outshot the Hurricanes 16-8, while the two teams combined for 25 fouls and two yellow cautions.
Lions’ goalkeeper Erik Mozzo (3-1) recorded the victory in net for Lions, playing in 83 minutes. Back-up ‘keeper Kyle Peel recorded the one Lions’ save in seven minutes worth of work.
Saint Leo returns to University Field on Friday, September 18 for a showdown with the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 pm.
