Saint Leo volleyball player Kaitlin McKenna and men’s soccer player Jonathan Glenn are unanimous selections as the first SLU Athletes of the Week for the 2009-10 year it was announced by the Saint Leo Sports Information Office on Monday morning.
As for Glenn, the junior forward wasted no time in getting the Lions on the board in their contest against Georgia Southwestern on Friday afternoon. After a five hour bus ride to Americus, Ga. Glenn shook off the rust in the first 64 seconds of the game and promptly planted the ball in the back of the net to tally Saint Leo’s first score. The native of Trinidad and Tobago inched closer to his first career hat trick with another goal in the 30th minute and would earn his career-best sixth point of the game with his third goal just two minutes later. That was all the Lions needed as the SLU defense shut down the Hurricanes to improve to 3-1 for the year.
Both student-athletes helped propel the Lions to an undefeated week as volleyball posted an unblemished record in the South Region Crossover Tournament in Pensacola, men’s soccer handed Georgia Southwestern a 3-0 drubbing and women’s soccer managed a 1-1 draw with #23 Armstrong Atlantic at home on Thursday night. In addition, men’s and women’s cross country ran their first uninterrupted race of the season, finishing seventh and fourth respectively.
It is a busy week for SLU Athletics as every Fall sport is in action, including women’s golf, who kicks off their non-championship season in Waynesville, N.C. in the Great Smokies Intercollegiate next Saturday. Volleyball will try to ‘Black Out the Tars’ on Wednesday in their Sunshine State Conference home opener and then travel to Melbourne, Fla. on Saturday to face Florida Tech. Women’s soccer will host Robert Morris College on Thursday evening before opener their 2009 conference schedule with a weekend match in St. Petersburg, Fla. against Eckerd College. Men’s soccer will host Palm Beach Atlantic on Friday evening and men’s and women’s cross country will travel to Gainesville, Fla. on Friday to race in the University of Florida Gator Invitational.
