Catawba and visiting Mars Hill battled to a 1-1 draw in South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer action on Wednesday night at Frock Field.  The Catawba Indians now stand at 3-4-1 overall and 0-0-1 in the SAC.  The Lions are 1-5-2 and 0-1-1.

In an evenly played match with numerous scoring chances for both sides, each keeper allowed just a single goal.  Mars Hill struck first in the ninth minute.  Giovanni Malnati (Guayaquil, ECUADOR) collected a pass from Friddy Hoegerner (Cologne, GERMANY) and beat Catawba keeper Tyler Held (Virginia Beach, VA/Kellam HS) from close range.

Catawba would have most of the chances the rest of the half, outshooting the Lions 8-2 in the opening period.  Carson Smith (Mooresville, NC/Mooresville HS) had a shot off the crossbar for one of the chances.

The Indians withstood an early attack by the Lions in the second half and got the equalizer in the 66th minute on a strike from Deon Cuffie-Joseph (Arima, TRINIDAD).  Smith sent a cross through the box that Cuffie-Joseph rifled into the right corner from 15 yards out.

Mars Hill held a 6-2 edge in shot in the extra time, but neither team could muster a score.  Held finished with nine saves for Catawba, while Alex Huckabee (Kernersville, NC) stopped eight shots for the Lions.  Mars Hill finished with an 18-17 edge in shots, while Catawba took 11 corners to six for the Lions.
