Shorter College took home a group of Southern States Athletic Conference Player of the Week awards for the week of Sept. 27 through Oct. 3 in a release from the conference on Monday afternoon. Earning the weekly honors for the Hawks and Lady Hawks were junior women`s soccer player Candace Edwards, volleyball senior Kasi Runion and junior men`s soccer player Sebastian Stihler.
It was Edwards` second hat trick of the season and the forward from Trinidad and Tobago now has 11 goals in her first six matches after joining the team five games into the year.
Edwards scored twice in a 7-0 win over Columbia (S.C.) College and then wrapped up the week by scoring the game-winner in the 75th-minute against Belhaven on Oct. 3.
Edwards will tie Shorter`s all-time record for single-season goals with one more strike (12).
Runion totaled 29 kills in three matches to lead the Lady Hawk volleyball team to a 2-1 week.
The senior from Ringgold stands just 15 kills away from passing Kate Puckett for first place on Shorter`s all-time kills list. Runion was also a force on the defensive side of the net, registering 14 blocks over that span, including six total blocks in a win over Faulkner University.
Stihler had his best week of the season for the Hawk soccer squad, tallying two goals and two assists in three matches.
His two goals and one assist paced the Hawks in an impressive 3-0 win on the road at Reinhardt and his assist to Ryan Timberlake in the 83rd-minute against Belhaven College on Oct. 3 salvaged a 1-1 draw with the No. 19 Blazers.
