Incarnate Word senior Troy Thompson earned his second Heartland Conference Offensive Player of the Week award after a three-goal performance against conference competition this past weekend.

Against Newman University, he scored the first goal of the game in what turned into a 7-0 rout of the Jets. Then, on Sunday, he struck early again – scoring in the 12th minute on a shot outside the box that banged in off the right post – and then finished off Texas-Permian Basin in overtime with a game-winning shot to keep UIW undefeated in conference play.

Thompson leads the Cardinals with five goals this season, and coupled with his two assists, he leads UIW with 12 points on the season. Hs his 12 points ranks him first in the conference, as does his 5 goals. Additionally, his goals-per-game average of 0.45 ranks him third in the Heartland.

The Cardinals hope that Thompson, and the rest of the team, can continue to find ways to put the ball into the back of the net tonight against arch rival St. Mary’s University. The Rattlers (4-5-1, 2-1-1) will look to give UIW its first Heartland Conference loss of the year while Incarnate Word (5-3-3, 3-0) would like nothing more than to show the Cardinal Fans a goal-scoring clinic at the expense of STMU.

Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
