Cumberland scored three goals in the first 25 minutes and added another in the second half in a 4-0 victory over Freed-Hardeman on Senior Day in men’s soccer action Thursday at Friendship Christian School.

Cumberland (5-4-2, 3-1-1 TSAC) ended a two-match winless streak with the victory and stayed in the hunt to host a first-round match in the TranSouth Championships, which start November 7.

JJ Henderson put the Bulldogs ahead in the 13th minute, heading in a cross from Nguyen Nguyen for Henderson’s third goal of the year and an early lead for the home team.

Bradley Williams’ header off a corner kick hit the left post in the 17th minute, but the Lions countered quickly and Ryan Engineer’s header sailed just over the crossbar less than a minute later.

Robert Als gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 edge in the 21st minute, hitting a one-timer past the keeper after a nice combination from Williams and Robert Boyd.

After a foul against Henderson in the box in the 25th minute, Nguyen booted in his first goal of the season on a penalty kick.

The Bulldogs added to the lead in the 69th minute after Juan Pablo Aparicio was tackled in the box. Adam Owczarzak netted his first goal of the season on a penalty kick for a 4-0 CU advantage.

Michael Michailidis picked up the victory in goal for CU, making two terrific diving saves, one in each half in the opening minutes.

Cumberland will host top-ranked Bethel Univ. Saturday at 3 p.m. at FCS in its final home match of the year.
