Down a goal with 24 minutes remaining in the America East tournament opening round match-up, Hartford rallied with two scores in the following 10 minutes to defeat the Boston University men's soccer team, 2-1, on Saturday night at Al-Marzook Field. With the loss to the Hawks (8-7-2), the Terriers will be unable to defend their conference crown, as they end the year at 9-7-2.
In the 34th minute, BU had a chance to add an insurance score, but sophomore Ben Berube's attempt was blocked and Knox's shot went wide. The Terriers entered the locker room with the 1-0 lead but were even in shots at five apiece.
During the second half at 60:52, BU was close again in scoring when sophomore Theo Terris sent a shot toward the far post from the left side of the box, but the diving goalie Nenad Cudic was able to deflect it out of bounds.
The Hawks were able to take advantage of the strong save and tie the game at 66:16, when James Stamopoulos headed in a pass from Patrick Boucher for his first goal of the year. Cedomir Tomcic put UH ahead for good at 75:12 when he rifled in a shot from 15 yards out after receiving a pass from Carlos Villa.
The Terriers had two final chances in the final minute. At 89:00, they had a corner kick attempt and even brought up senior goalie Hrafn Davidsson but were unable to attempt a shot. Finally, seconds before time expired, senior Samuel Appiah sent a shot wide just inside the box to the joy of the Hawks.
Cudic finished the game with two saves for the victory, while Davidsson had four. UH had the edge in shots, 12-9, despite BU having the advantage in corners, 5-1.
