The NC State men's soccer team began its 2010 season in exciting fashion, as the Wolfpack claimed a 4-3 win in double overtime against Sacramento State in the Duke/Nike Classic. Sophomore Michael Smith netted his second goal of the game just 1:19 into the second overtime period, as the Pack claimed victory in its season debut.

Both teams found the back of the net in the first half. Smith was the first to open the scoring, as he cleaned up a cross and got the Pack on the scoreboard at the 7:13 mark. Sacramento State would answer, as Bryan Baker evened things up in the 13th minute.

The Hornets would come out of the half and net the first goal of the second half, as Fernando Cabadas found the back of the net just 1:18 into the second half.

The Pack would answer, and even things up at 2-2 in the 56th minute. Senior Chris Zuerner slotted a through-ball to classmate Akil DeFreitas down the right wing. DeFreitas dribbled into the penalty box, and went near post for his first goal of the season at the 55:23 mark.

The Pack would once again take the lead in the 79th minute. Freshman Gbengha Makinde found DeFreitas in the penalty box after a long ball, and DeFreitas was taken down and awarded a penalty shot. Senior Tyler Lassiter converted, and put the Pack ahead at the 78:58 mark.

With less than four minutes left in regulation, the Hornets would once again even things up, when Chris Bettencourt netted a score in 4:40 left to play.

After neither team scored in the first 10-minute overtime period, it was the Pack that converted early in the second extra period for the win. Zuerner played a free kick to DeFreitas just outside the PK box, and DeFreitas found a streaking Smith down the left side for his second goal of the game just at the 101:19 mark.
