Four members of the Manhattanville men’s soccer team received Freedom All-Conference recognition this season as announced by the conference office on Tuesday.
Coming off his Player of the Year campaign in 2009, George went on to to score seven goals in all 17 games. He scored the first goal of the season for the Valiants against Richard Stockton and then added another goal another goal against Vassar in the second game of the year. One of his biggest feats on the season came against the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, when he scored two penalty kick goals. His final goal of the season against The College of Staten Island was once again from the penalty spot in the game’s opening minute.
Although he is not known for scoring goals and is predominantly a stay-at-home defender, Sjöberg scored three goals and had three assists this season, the most in his career so far, to tie for fourth on the team with nine points. He scored his first goal of the season against NYU on the road and then added two home goals against King’s (Pa.) and Staten Island, in addition to being one of the best overall defenders in the conference.
Haye finished his career in style, scoring four goals in his final two games on the way to All-Conference honors. Against Delaware Valley on Senior Night, He scored a natural hat trick and added two assists for a career-high eight points, and as a result was second on the team with five goals scored in 2010. In four years with the team, the All-Conference forward scored 16 goals and assisted on nine tallies for 41 points in 71 career matches.
Merlos was one of the best freshmen in the conference this season, as he was one of only three first-year players named to the All-Conference teams. Merlos began his collegiate career by scoring in his first game against Farmingdale State on day two of the Valiant Classic. He also scored the game-winning goal against Albertus Magnus and then scored two goals against Staten Island, ranking third on the team with his four tallies.
Manhattanville (10-6-1, 3-3-1 Freedom) finished the season just two points shy of a playoff berth; however, the 10 wins still marked the team's third straight 10-win season under head coach Didier Orellana.
