Harry Mason scored four goals and freshman Josh McCausland posted a goal and three assists, as Cumberland routed Berea College, 9-0, in the season opener for both clubs Friday in the Golden Corral Classic in Barbourville, Ky.
Mason scored the first two goals for the Bulldogs, both on assists from McCausland, in a span of one minute and one second in the 19th and 20th minutes of the match. The first was after a cross from McCausland deep into the box and the second was a header.
McCausland then assisted on Eric Clark’s goal in the 26th minute, providing another cross deep into the box. Mason scored on a Robert Boyd assist in the 32nd minute for 4-0 Cumberland lead at the half.
Marconi Neto got into the scoring column on another assist from Boyd in the 60th minute and McCausland scored unassisted less than a minute later. Kempess Villafana added a goal in the 78th minute, Mason scored again in the 80th minute and Jasper Driskill found the back of the net on Boyd’s third assist in the 89th minute.
Cumberland posted a 27-4 advantage in shots while CU keeper Matthew Shattuck posted a clean sheet, making just two saves. Berea’s Caleb Stringer made six saves in net.
Cumberland will play host Union College at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday in the final match of the tournament.
