Robert Als scored four minutes into overtime and assisted on the other goal for Cumberland in a 2-1 victory over Union University at home Saturday in the quarterfinals of the TranSouth Championships.

With the win Cumberland advances to play eighth-ranked Bethel University on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in McKenzie, Tenn.

Harry Mason’s pass found Als on the rightside of the box, where he took one touch and beat Union keeper James Landham top shelf for the game-winner and the first goal of the season for the senior.

Als assisted on Nathan Gillespie’s tying goal in the 40th minute, with Gillespie’s shot hitting the bottom of the crossbar and bouncing into the net. Union’s Guilherme Reis put the visitors ahead in the 27th minute, heading in a long throw-in from Cody Styx.

CU keeper Matthew Shattuck made seven saves in the victory, facing 14 total shots from Union. Landham finished with four saves.
