DIRECTV W Connection departed Piarco International Airport yesterday for Guadalajara, Mexico.
The Trinidad and Tobago Pro League champions will face off against Mexican rivals Club Deportivo Guadalajara, popularly referred to as Chivas, in a CONCACAF Champions League football match on Wednesday at the 49,000-seater Estadio Omnilife Stadium.
Chivas, who compete in the Liga MX (Mexican First Division) are the most successful and among the most popular teams in Mexico.
DIRECTV W Connection, last played against Chivas in 2007 during the then CONCACAF Champions Cup, coming away with a 2-1 victory at home in the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, playing with just 10 men. To date, this has been one of the most memorable moments in the young club's history.
Travelling with 19 players and his full technical staff, head coach and technical director Stuart Charles Fevrier has put together a strong squad and is expecting success, as he intends on capitalising on Chivas' 1-0 away loss against Guatemalan club Xelaju last week.
W Connection drew their opening match 2-2 with Xelaju at home after leading 2-0 and conceding two late goals.
Connection are captained by goalkeeper Jan Michael Williams and includes veteran defender Elijah Joseph, a host of national Under-23 players, as well as their most recent signing, Surinamese striker Stefano Rijssel. This will be Rijssel's first ever CONCACAF appearance.
