Marco Fabian scored his first three goals of the season -- and was instrumental in a fourth - to give Chivas de Guadalajara a 4-0 win over DirecTV W Connection on Wednesday for its first victory in the CONCACAF Champions League.
The win was only Chivas' second in eight games this season in all competitions, and moved the 11-time Mexican league champion into second place in Group 8 with three points, one behind Xelaju. W Connection remained last with zero points.
Fabian scored in the 53rd, 68th and 92nd minutes and took a hard shot that W Connection goalkeeper Jan-Michael Williams couldn't hold, resulting in another goal by Carlos Fierreo in the 64th.
Chivas, which was without injured Luis Perez, Omar Arellano and Jorge Enriquez, dominated possession and chances from the start. Even with nine of 11 starters from Sunday's 2-1 loss to Monterrey, it was unable to create many quality opportunities until the second half.
Erick Torres put a header off the right post in the 25th minute and Fabian attempted an acrobatic overhead scissors kick in the 39th that went into the arms of Williams, but it were two of the few serious shots Chivas had despite repeatedly sending crosses into the penalty area.
Fabian finally converted for Guadalajara when Rafael Marquez Lugo unleashed a left-footed drive from distance that Williams tried to punch clear. But the ball bounded down the middle of the penalty area and Fabian ran on to volley a bouncing ball back into the net from near the penalty spot.
Fabian became Marquez Lugo 11 minutes later, taking a shot from beyond the 18 that Williams again blocked, but the ball bounded to the right. Torres tried a shot but appeared to mis-hit it, only for it to slowly roll past a now out-of-position Williams and to an unmarked Fierro , who simply tapped into an open net.
The three combined again in the 68th, with Marquez Lugo slipping a ball down the middle of the area where Torres had a touch before Fabian finished from the edge of the six.
Fabian tacked on a finale in injury time, running onto a ball from Luis Morales, rounding Williams to the left and finishing into an open net from the edge of the six.
Chivas won for the first time in four games at home this season, and matched its goal total in six league games this season.
W Connection, which won't begin its TT Pro League season until next month, drew 2-2 at home against Xelaju in its Champions League opener and will travel to Guatemala on September 18 for its next match.
Chivas will next play in the Champions League on September 26 at W Connection.
