Former national footballers Carlton "The General" Franco, David Nakhid, Dwight Yorke and Everald "Gally" Cummings are among 200 people being honoured by the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (T&TFF).
These people will be honoured at a special dinner and awards function which will take place from 7.30 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Port of Spain. The event comes as the T&TFF continues to celebrate its 100-year anniversary.

The awards function will cater to approximately 1,200 persons and will be attended by 11 Members of Parliament and several foreign dignitaries. Several of the world's top football officials will be present, including FIFA president Joseph Sepp Blatter, UEFA president Michel Platini, Brazilian Federation president Ricardo Texiera and former FIFA president Dr. Joao Havelange.

Winnie Mandela, former wife of ex-South African president Nelson Mandela and a representative of the local organising committee for the South Africa 2010 World Cup, will also be here. Also scheduled to attend are the ambassadors of the United States, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico and Britain.

T&T sporting greats Brian Lara and Hasely Crawford and Father Clyde Harvey are also on the guest list.

"Several plane loads will be arriving from all over the world bringing guests to our centennial dinner on Friday evening from seven p.m.," said Jack Warner, the T&TFF special adviser. "They will be here because they all realise that one hundred years is a landmark in any institution."

Yesterday, Warner launched the T&TFF's week of football which will feature the senior national team of T&T meeting Guatemala in a World Cup qualifier on Saturday. During the week, youth national teams of Brazil and El Salvador will also be here to test their T&T counterparts.

"If ever there was a football week in this country, I want to say this is it," Warner declared.

The FIFA vice president added that persons honoured will be given the dignity they deserve because of their contribution to football.

"We have 100 living honorees...several of whom I am seeing here today, and 100 posthumous honorees, all of whom will be given awards. It will be a blaze of glory, and believe you me, if you miss it will take you another 100 years to enjoy it."

FIFA President Sepp Blatter and former French Football Star Michel Platini heads a list of global dignitaries arriving in this country on Thursday to be part of the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation’s Gala Centennial Dinner at the Dr Joao Havelange Centre of Excellence on Friday.

This and a host of other announcements were made at a media conference ahead of the coming set of activities at the Queens Park Oval Banquet Hall on Tuesday. Over One Hundred distinguished Centennial Honorees will also be the centre of attraction on Friday.

Aside from Saturday’s 2010 World Cup Qualifier between T&T and Guatemala at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on Saturday, the next prime encounter will see Brazil’s National Under 16 team facing T&T’s National Under 17 team at the Marvin Lee Stadium from 6pm on Thursday. Brazil Football Confederation President Ricardo Teixiera will also be here for the dinner and to witness the games which include a second match on Sunday between Brazil’s U-16s and a Tobago Youth Eleven at the Dwight Yorke Stadium.

On Wednesday, T&T's Senior Team faces Guyana from 5:30pm and T&T's U-20s face El Salvador's U-20s from 7:30pm.

TTFF Special Adviser Jack Warner also announced that Blatter and other guests will pay  courtesy visits on President  George Maxwell Richards, Prime Minister Patrick Manning and Sports Minister Gary Hunt. On Friday there will also be a signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between FIFA and the University of the West Indies which Warner said would change the face of sports development in T&T.

He noted too that T&T will in fact host the 2010 FIFA Women's Under 17 World Championship and President Blatter will make the official announcement on the weekend.
