The Wrexham Football Club lost their English League One status on Tuesday night when they fell 2-1 to promotion-chasing Brentford at the Racecourse Ground.
Their relegation to League Two, which is the lowest rung of professional football in England, has put an exclamation mark on a tumultuous season for the Wales-based club.
Over the past six months, Wrexham went into administration and were docked ten points, while they are also in danger of losing their stadium and name unless a buyer can be found for the cash-strapped club.
A break-up of Wrexham's Trinidad and Tobago trio of Carlos Edwards, Hector Sam and Dennis Lawrence also seems imminent.
The six-foot-seven Lawrence has another two years on his contract and is likely to wear the club colours for the 2005/06 season, but Sam and Edwards turn free agents next month and are less certain of a future at Wrexham.
Sam, who was recently recalled to international duty, told the Trinidad Express it was a tense time for him.
"This is your future you are talking about," said Sam, "and you have your family and so on to consider. I don't know what's going on but I will leave it up to my agent.
"I will probably take a two-week vacation (next month) and then return to sort things out."
Neither Sam nor Edwards should be short of offers. Premier League and League Championship scouts targeted Edwards for the past year, while fellow Welsh club, Chester City, made an offer for Sam this season, which was rejected.
Wrexham needed to beat Brentford on Tuesday and Huddersfield this weekend to stay up. Sam missed out with the flu and felt heartbroken that he was unable to help in such an important fixture.
However, he pointed out that the season was not all bad as the "Red Dragons" won the LDV Cup and are also in the Welsh Cup Final on May 11 against Swansea.
"I learned a lot this season," he said. "I think the LDV Cup was our most important achievement and we will try to win the Welsh Cup to still end the season on a high."
He admitted that the chances of the three Trinidad and Tobago players linking up next season was "slim", but he hopes to line up with Lawrence and Edwards for international duty.
"It will be a bit rough for me this summer," said Sam, "because I have no idea what is going on. But I will always be available for my national team."
Wrexham host Huddersfield on Saturday for their final League One fixture this season. Sam should return to training today and hopes to play.
It might be his final league outing for Wrexham.
