Marvin Andrews with the Soca Warriors sevens teamA CHEEKY seven-a-side team stunned the opposition at a recent charity tournament in Kirkcaldy by turning up with a big-name ringer in their line-up.

Soca Warriors convinced former Rangers and Raith Rovers star Marvin Andrews to play for them in the Ronnie Coyle Memorial Trophy - an annual fundraiser among Raith fans - last weekend.

And Marvin, capped over 100 times for the real Soca Warriors - the nickname given to the Trinidad and Tobago national side - helped the team to glory as they made off with the silverware.

One of the team’s founders, Graeme Kilgour, explained: “The majority of us are Raith Rovers fans so we named ourselves Soca Warriors in tribute to ex-players Tony Rougier and Marvin Andrews.

“We had the idea of asking them to play but we couldn’t get hold of Rougier because we think he is back in Trinidad and Tobago.

“With Marvin being local we phoned up the Church of Zion where he is based and managed to get a meeting with him.

“At first he thought we were some chancers looking for money but all we asked him to do was turn up and play for a couple of minutes - which he did.

“He played in a couple of games for us, but he had to scoot off before the final.”

Andrews is still considered a hero at Rangers but he is best remembered in Kirkcaldy for his two spells at Raith, where he played a key role in the Second Division title win in 2009.

“A lot of people were pleased to see him, and were getting their photo taken with him,” Graeme added.

“Marvin seemed to enjoy the craic. We’re hoping we can convince him to play again next year!”

Graeme also conducted an interview with Marvin for his Youtube channel, adding: “I got him to do keepy-uppies while he answered questions about his career.

“He’s been very helpful and has even talked about getting the Trinidad and Tobago FA to get a set of strips sent over to us.”

The Ronnie Coyle Memorial Trophy was named in honour of the Rovers legend who sadly passed away from leukaemia aged just 46 in April 2011.

Proceeds from the event, held at Balwearie High School, were donated to Maggie’s Fife.
