Former Gillingham defender and Trinidad & Tobago international Ian Cox has signed for Whitstable Town.

The 42-year-old last played for Maidstone United in the 2008/09 season having played more than 400 games in the Football League for Gillingham, Crystal Palace, Burnley and Bournemouth.

He also played 16 times for his country, and was on the bench for all three of their World Cup games in 2006.

Now he has decided to rekindle his career at the Ryman One South side where former Gills team mate Nicky Southall is manager.

Southall said: “I have played in a few charity games with him in the last couple of months. I threw the idea at him a few months ago and he didn’t dismiss it, so I thought you never know.

“He then gave me a call and said he wants another year at it the other week.

“It’s a great signing for the club. I’m just looking for a bit of experience in and around the team and there is no better man than him. Me and him go back a long way.”

Southall has no qualms about his fitness and is realistic about his involvement.

“We both know he’s not going to play every game, but he’s the kind of player that if we’re playing away and need some experience against big teams he will be good.
