HECTOR SAM has told of how he aims to write himself into Wrexham folklore and join legendary Racecourse strikers Dixie McNeil and Andy Morrell in the Racecourse Hall of Fame.

Sam's unbridled exuberance is the type that has to lace the Red Dragons playing and backroom staff at present. Manager Denis Smith is a torchbearer in the attempt to ignore boardroom cannon fire and somehow sustain Coca-Cola League One soccer on a breadline budget.

The North Wales outfit brushed aside a determined challenge from struggling Notts County on Tuesday to go into the hat this Saturday for the next stage of the LDV Vans Trophy.

That they triumphed at a near-deserted Meadow Lane was thanks to Trinidad and Tobago international Sam's intervention from the bench at the break - the pint-size attacker stroking home the killer strike inside the last four minutes to seal his team's stirring fightback.

And Sam, ironically born on Mount Hope, Trinidad, 26 years ago, now wants to smash the hallowed 25-goal barrier by the end of a campaign that could yet see Wrexham defy all soccer odds.

The player bagged a treble in the 3-2 win at Oldham earlier this season and his blast on the banks of the Trent means he has 33 in all competitions since landing at the Racecourse from San Juan Jabloteh in a £125,000 deal in 2000.

He said, "I feel I'm capable of so much more in the scoring stakes. I want to get 25 goals before the end of this current season and I know I have the ability to hit this target.

"It's been frustrating because I started to strike up a decent understanding with Chris Armstrong up front and now he's out with injury. We've had nothing but blows lately - but at least Carlos Edwards could be back by January."

Sam, like others at Wrexham, is the eternal optimist. The Red Dragons travel to Doncaster this weekend in the knowledge that owner Alex Hamilton's attempts to remove club directors John Reames, Dave Griffiths and Dave Bennett via a EGM were postponed on a technicality in voting procedure yesterday.
