Goalkeeper Clayton Ince says he is delighted to play his first game for the Sky Blues, even if the result - a 1-0 defeat against Athlone Town - wasn't what the side was looking for.

The Trinidad and Tobago international joined Coventry in the summer on a Bosman-free transfer after spending six seasons at Crewe.

"It's great to have that first 90 minutes under my belt and I'm glad I've got it out of the way," said the giant custodian.

"It's good to play with your new team-mates and see how they react to different situations and how they play but I am disappointed we lost the first game. But at this time in pre-season you expect to get those kinds of results so we can put those things right for the start of the season.

"It was a surprise that we lost because with the status of Athlone and the calibre of our side we should be doing better than that and getting better results. But it's a learning process and we know that everyone will push themselves for better results when the season starts."

Ince was forced to miss the pre-season trip to Ibiza due to problems obtaining a visa - but he underlines it hasn't dampened his spirits.

"It was disappointing because when you come to a club you want to be around the guys and part of everything. But that is in the past now and I've had some time to gel with my team-mates.

"Everybody is ambitious and wants to go forward and that is exactly the same as I am looking for. I want to push forward and if everyone is thinking on the same wavelength, the only way we can go is up."
