T&T international Marlon Rojas is being waived by his US Major League Soccer (MLS) club Real Salt Lake (RSL) just four months after the new franchise had signed him up as a utility player.
Rojas was a regular early in the season for RSL but lost his place in the starting line-up in recent weeks and he is among nine MLS names released this week to be cut from their teams.
The players officially placed on waivers by MLS teams on Monday were Rojas and his RSL teammate Noah Palmer, Alfonso Loera and Ryan Suarez of Chivas USA, Colorado’s Eugene Sepuya, the MetroStars’‚ Mamadou Diallo and Gilberto Flores, and Cassio and Felix Brillant of New England Revolution.
Players are placed on waivers for a 48-hour period, at which point the teams with the lowest points per game during the current season would have the highest priority claiming opportunity.
Prior to joining RSL, Rojas had spent his entire professional career in his home country, having played with Superstar Rangers, Police FC and Joe Public, with whom he won the T&T Pro League title in 2004.
Rojas played college soccer at both St John’s University and the University of Tampa, winning the Division II national title at the latter in 2001.
He spent time with MLS side DC United in 2003, but departed prior to the start of the regular season and represented T&T at the Digicel Caribbean Cup finals in Barbados in February.
He leaves his T&T team-mate Leslie Fitzpatrick and Jamaica international Andy Williams at RSL, who are second from the bottom of the Western Conference standings with 12 points, gathered from three wins and three draws in 15 matches.
