Shakes, a summer signing from Bolton Wanderers, started on the right of midfield with Michael Pook out on the left.
Despite Rhys Evans saving a penalty Swindon went down to goals from Paul Hayes and Chris Shuker, goals which came either side of the break.
"It wasn't the start we wanted that's for sure. I don't really know what went wrong but we have to work at it. I was pleased to start and finish the game, but we want to get that first win under our belts," said Shakes speaking on Monday.
"Barnsley were an organized side and we didn't really manage to get behind them as much as we would have liked. We had chances but after that they got in front and it went from there. You then wonder whether it will be your day but
"I like to get into space and run at players so hopefully, if selected, I can do just that on Tuesday. Oldham will be a good side but we just have to go out there and give it everything we have."
