DENNIS LAWRENCE is gearing up for the biggest summer of his life but admits he may not recognise too many faces when he returns to Wrexham.

The giant defender is heading for the World Cup in Germany in June with Trinidad and Tobago.

But with only three of his current club mates, besides himself, under contract past the end of this season Lawrence is not too sure what the squad will look like by the time he returns to north Wales.

"There is always the risk that the worst may happen and some of the guys may not be here by the time I get back, of course there is," said Lawrence.

"I hope it doesn't turn out like that and I don't believe it will in the end.

"But it is all out of our hands for the moment so we will just have to wait and see."

Manager Denis Smith is the most frustrated man at the Racecourse right now.

Of his senior squad only captain Darren Ferguson, Lawrence, rising star Mark Jones and goalkeeper Michael Ingham have deals which run into next season.

But Smith's hands are tied by the ongoing financial saga surrounding the club and he is unable to even negotiate new terms with the players he wants to keep.

The administrators currently running the club do not want to make any fresh financial commitments until they have found new owners for the club.

And they cannot offload the club to clear its £4m debts until the ongoing litigation with former chairman Alex Hamilton is concluded.

That could happen as soon as Tuesday when the Court of Appeal will rule on whether or not Hamilton can continue his legal fight over the ownership of the Racecourse.

But whatever happens if means that most of Wrexham's squad face another worrying few months as they wonder exactly where their playing futures lie.

But Lawrence believes that all the negatives can be transformed into motivation to push Wrexham back into the play-off picture.

"We haven't really spoken about the situation openly because players' contracts are their own private business," he said.

"I think most of the guys will want to stay but whatever happens the motivation is there for everyone to put themselves in the shop window by performing well between now and the end of the season.

"It is not an ideal situation but it could be turned into something positive.

"I'm a positive person and I think it will get sorted eventually but until then all we can do as players is concentrate on doing well from now until the end of the season."

Wrexham have allowed several precious points to slip through their fingers in recent weeks but still have three games in hand on some of their rivals.

And Lawrence said: "It is all there to play for. We have let a few good opportunities get away from us recently but we have a strong belief that we are good enough to take our chance."
