English-based striker Stern John is experiencing some frustrating times with new club Coventry City and the latest episode saw the player being booed as he was taken off the pitch in Saturday’s 4-1 drubbing by First Division leaders Wigan Athletic.
Other than a penalty strike on his debut, John is yet to open his account for the First Division side and his fans were in for a torrid time as they saw their “Blues” outplayed on the weekend. When John was taken off in the 86th minute by manager Peter Reid, it brought the biggest cheer of the match. Meantime Nathan Ellington, eligible to play for T&T, was on the scoresheet for the winning team.
John has vowed to bounce back saying: “I give 100 per cent every time I go out on the pitch and hopefully it is going to turn round for me in the next couple of games. I am still a Coventry player and will continue to give 100-per-cent no matter what." John said.
"Strikers feed off goals and I haven't scored a goal for the last six or seven games so I am a bit disappointed but I am going to carry on working hard and hopefully it will go right for me. I just need a bit of luck.
"It affects your confidence after a while because I was expected to come here and do well. I got off to a decent start but I am disappointed I haven't scored again. But it is going to take time because I am just gelling with a new team and new players."
Leaping to the defence of a player he signed, Reid added that another striker Tim Sherwood was also jeered by Coventry fans before. "The boy is a good player but he is just not having the best of times. People pay their money and make their choice so the stick is part and parcel of football.
"Stern isn't the first player to be booed and I am sure he won't be the last. He has just got to show character and get on with the game.” Coventry are just above the relegation zone in 19th spot.
