Coventry City boss Micky Adams is backing Stern John to have his best season yet in a Sky Blues shirt.

The Trinidad and Tobago international got off to a flying start with a sensational goal to help sink Sunderland on Sunday, and looks bang on form to enjoy a complete campaign at the club.

"Since I have been here Stern has only had halves of seasons really so we are trying to put it all together and have one successful season," said the manager.

"He will score goals, I have got no doubt at all. His goal on Sunday was out of the top drawer and that's the quality of the man.

"I know he has his critics in and around the city but he is perhaps the only player on the books, other than Don Hutchison, who could have done that."

The striker, who was farmed out on loan to Derby County following a slow start to last season, reiterated the point about finally establishing himself at the club, saying: "I didn't start off last season particularly well but got stronger in the second half of the season.

"I am fitter and stronger now and hopefully I can start this season like I finished last and keep that going all year."

Meanwhile, the 29-year-old is delighted with the club's latest signing, his fellow World Cup team-mate Chris Birchill.

"I heard Chris was signing a few days before and I was very happy because I think he will do really well for us," he said of the £300,000 capture from Port Vale.

"He is a good lad, works very hard and brings something to the table.

"I thought he did well against Sunderland considering he only trained with the team once before the game and I am sure he is going to get even better."
