Former Malick Senior Comprehensive player Conrod Smith has become a favourite with Canadian A-League side Calgary Mustangs since joining them in May.
At first, Smith who was spotted at home by a coach attending a Concacaf seminar at the Dr Joao Havelange Centre of Excellence, Macoya, had difficult adjusting to the conditions with the Canadian-based club whose home ground is close to 30,000 feet above sea level. But now he’s the toast of the club with six goals to his name. His latest goals came in a 4-3 win over the Milwaukee Wave United last Friday.
“At first I was struggling to settle down but after some heavy pressure from the coach things started going my way and I’m happy to say that I have been doing good for the club,” he said. Conrad Smith was also named to one A-League “Team of the Week.”
Smith’s form earned him a call up from coach Bertille St Clair for today’s friendly against Guatemala and he’s hoping to continue from his last appearance for the senior team in which he scored in a 2-2 draw with Bermuda in February.
“I keep telling everyone at the club that good performances for them is what will get me on the national team and by doing well for my country is also a plus for the club. So my aim is to perform well and earn my spot,” said the 22-year-old former Arima Morvant Fire player.
