DESPITE a disappointing defensive display, Dennis Lawrence believes Swansea City can be a better team than Leeds and he expects the squad to quickly make amends for their latest defeat.

Along with the rest of the back four, Lawrence will be disappointed by the nature of the goals Swansea conceded and from a personal point of view the former Trinidad and Tobago international will know he wasn’t at his best.

Lawrence admits the squad were fully aware of how tough the game would be but said the squad weren’t satisfied with how they played in one of the season’s key fixtures.

“Obviously it was always going to be a difficult game coming to Leeds,” he explained.

“But we are a bit disappointed because we felt we could have done a bit better, especially with the goals we conceded.”

The big defender was quick to praise Leeds’ performance but he argued that if the Swans had played to their full potential then the result could have been very different.

“They were a big, powerful team and they played well against us,” he said.

“But it’s disappointing because I think we could have matched them and we could even have been better than them. We have to be able to come to places like this and get results.”

Along with Garry Monk, Lawrence had a torrid afternoon trying to contain Leeds’ lively strike partnership of Tresor Kandol and Jermaine Beckford.

Like his manager, the centre back also felt aggrieved by the free-kick that led to the home side’s opener but he accepted that the referee’s decision was no excuse for the Swans’ defence.

“They are a powerful striking force for defenders to deal with but hopefully next time we will do better against them when they come to Swansea,” he said.

“They definitely stole a few yards with that free kick but if the ref decides that’s where it should be taken from then it’s up to us to deal with it.”

The Swans now have a week to prepare for Brighton’s visit to the Liberty Stadium and Lawrence expects his team to get back on track as quickly as possible.

There’s no point dwelling on this latest defeat and a victory against Dean Wilkins’ promotion contenders will be a good way for the Swans to bounce back.

Lawrence said, “We have got to look at the week ahead and get a good result that’s in our favour next time round.”
