SUNDERLAND fans have not yet seen the best of Kenwyne Jones.

That’s the view of his clubmate and fellow Trinidad & Tobago international Carlos Edwards, who has known Jones since they were at college together.

Target man Jones has made a huge impact on Wearside since his £6 million arrival from Southampton in August.

He is the Black Cats’ leading scorer this season with four Premiership goals to his name.

But Edwards says that the 23-year-old is still learning about life in the top flight and he reckons that Jones will only get better.

Edwards said: “I’ve known Kenwyne a while – since college days, although he is younger than me and he was just starting his classes as I was leaving – and we lived in the same area when we were growing up.

“He still has got a lot to learn but gradually he is improving.

“It was a big move for him to come here and he is still settling in, but the fact that there are players, such as myself and Dwight Yorke, that he knows has helped him.

“He’s young and still getting better but I am sure there is much more to come from Kenwyne Jones.”

Jones arrived in England in 2004 when he joined the Saints.

He has played in a variety of different positions – including central defence and midfield – but established himself as a striker while at St Mary’s Stadium.

He had loan spells at Sheffield Wednesday and Stoke before moving to Sunderland and his performances since moving to Wearside have attracted attention from a number of clubs, including Liverpool.

Edwards added: “Because of his size, sometimes he was played at centre-half back home and he has also played in midfield – he was a real utility player – but his best position is as a striker.

“We don’t want to put too much pressure on him because he is still only 23, but he has done very well so far and I’m sure he will get better.”
