Stewart Henderson has earmarked Kenwyne Jones as a front-runner for the front-line after the Trinidad international impressed in attack for the reserves last night.

As Saints rolled over Leicester 3-1 at Staplewood the 20 year-old twice went close with headers, hitting the bar in the second half, as well as setting up Leon Best for the opening goal in his first run out leading the line.

After the match Henderson explained: “I think we are still trying to work out what might be his best position.

“He has done very well in the middle of the park but I thought he looked very useful up front as well last night.

“We are still trying to get to the bottom of him, he is a big lad with good potential, he is athletic, good in the air and I don’t think he has been brought up in a specific position really.

“I have had three or four games with him in the centre of midfield where he has done well but I think after that performance I will have to have another look at him in that position.

“He has got fantastic spring and considering he has had very little experience playing up front I thought he did very well and was a handful.”

His strike partner Leon Best bagged a brace against the Foxes, taking his tally for the season to nine in just seven appearances for the second string. Henderson added that the youngster is sure to benefit after making his debut for the first team recently.

He continued: “Any goals are important for strikers and I am sure that will help his confidence.

“With Leon he is never going to go too many games without scoring, he just needs to learn to simplify his game a little bit outside the box, bring other people into the game better and get himself into the box a bit more.”

Best added: “It was great to get two goals and that amount of time on the pitch under my belt. I don’t think I have played that much football in a long time so I need the fitness.

“At the moment I have got to show what I can do to get back in the first team because it is not easy up there but I will just keep trying here and keep scoring and hopefully that will keep me in the gaffer’s thoughts.

“He has shown that he will give you a chance and that you are never too young so if you are doing the business he will put you in.

“Dexter has scored a hat-trick and put himself in there so I just need to put myself up there too.

“With my goals last night it is normally Dexter who scores those kind of efforts but I am learning from him. I just followed up, went for everything and it has paid off for me.

“A goal is a goal so I am happy however it goes in. They were a bit like the goals I scored against Derby earlier in the season. They weren’t the best strikes I have scored but I was working hard to close down the players so I am pleased.”
