Trinidad and Tobago's midfielder David Nakhid has gone on a hunger strike at the Palais de Justice Detention Centre while awaiting trial in Beirut, Lebanon, according to reports in Guardian and Express newspapers yesterday.

Nakhid appeared before a judge on Tuesday to answer two fraud charges.

However, no evidence was taken when the case was called and the matter was adjourned to yesterday, when it was expected to begin.

A source in Lebanon, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Nakhid relayed his intention to begin the strike through a note passed to a policeman.

"David said he is taking this action until he gets his rights," said the source. "He is also asking that your government and FIFA put more pressure on the authorities here to free him, as he is guilty of no wrongdoing."
