Walsall goalkeeper Clayton Ince is set for a spell on the sidelines after tearing his groin, but understudy Rene Gilmartin is ready to grasp his opportunity.
Influential stopper Ince sat out last night’s 3-2 defeat at Oldham after picking up the injury in the loss to MK Dons at the weekend and manger Jimmy Mullen confirmed the damage following the last minute defeat at Boundary Park.

Gilmartin has made just seven appearances in a three-and-a-half year Saddlers career and says he is ready for a concerted run in the side, although it is not yet known exactly how long Ince will be out for.

He said:“I will take the chance with two hands if I have more of an opportunity now. It is sad Clayton has an injury, but hopefully I will have a chance of gelling into the team.

“It is tough sometimes when you are not playing, but when you come in you are asked to do a job and there are only two of us here so you have to be ready.

“It was a nice performance last night and I would like to build on that now, but it is so disappointing we lost.”

The 21-year-old Irishman was left helpless at Boundary Park as former Albion striker Lee Hughes netted a last-minute winner to break Walsall hearts.

Gilmartin was beaten by a wicked deflection from Mark Allott and Hughes’ volley in the first half.
