Nigel HenryHenry joined by fellow T&T defender Villaroel

The Puerto Rico Islanders announced that two Trinidad and Tobago defenders will be part of the 2009 squad, pending league’s approval. Central defender Nigel Henry will be back with the team for his second season while Kevon Villaroel will join the Islanders for his first professional season outside his native Trinidad and Tobago.

Henry, a former T&T international, brings back vast USL and European experience having played for the Hershey Wildcats, Toronto Lynx, Charleston Battery and Montreal Impact of the USL First Division as well as Kiruna FF of Sweden. He was a key member of the Islanders successful defense in the 2008 season. He played 27 matches for the Islanders and had one assist before having a season-ending injury in the USL-1 Semifinal series against the Rochester Rhinos.

Villaroel, a 21-year-old left back, has represented his country in international competition at the youth levels. He has previously played for Joe Public FC, Rangers FC and, most recently, San Juan Jabloteh of the Trinidad and Tobago Professional League.

With these two additions, the Islanders currently have four players in the roster hailing from the Caribbean island of Trinidad and Tobago. The other two are forward Kendall Jagdeosingh and Osei Telesford. Both of them are active members of their country’s national Team in their quest to qualify to the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The Islanders are back in Puerto Rico from their preseason camp in Bradenton, Florida. They resume play in the CONCACAF Champions League in the Quarterfinal round with the first leg match against CD Marathon of Honduras on Thursday, February 26 at the JRL Stadium. The match can be seen on Fox Soccer Channel live at 8:00 pm ET. The second leg is the following Wednesday, March 4 at 8:00 pm ET on FSC.
