Gudjon Thordarson is optimistic is hoping that Dennis Lawrence will not need surgery to rectify his fractured cheekbone. The Trinidad and Tobago International visited a specialist yesterday and after holding talks with the Crewe medical staff, undergoing an operation is now the last resort.
Thordarson is hopeful that once the swelling has eased around the cheekbone that Lawrence may consider wearing a protective mask that was made famous by the England midfielder Paul Gascoigne after he suffered a similar injury in a World Cup qualifying match against Holland back in 1993. Gazza played in Norway just days later although he did complain of it being uncomfortable to play in.

Professionals such as AC Milan defender Paolo Maldini have worn tan improved version ever since and Crewe will assess how the injury reacts before making a final decision with our loaned player. One thing is for certain the defender will miss this weekend's trip to Brighton with the likes of George Abbey, Danny O'Donnell and Chris McCready hoping for a chance.

Gudjon explained to the official web-site: "We are hopeful that Dennis will not need an operation. That would be good news and the specialist is optimistic that it will settle down on its own.

"He is expected to be out for at least four weeks but we will assess the situation and perhaps look at him wearing a protective mask to bring him back a bit earlier. It is a big loss to lose him at this time because he is an experienced defender, and a leader back there.

"Those players coming into the team have to ready and make sure they do the job required for the team."
